School
The Academic Lyceum of Westminster International University in Tashkent (ALWIUT) was established on December 9, 2008, and is a comprehensive two-year public high school. Unlike other countries’ educational systems, which offer 12 years of school education, Uzbekistan’s education system comprises 11 years of school. Instead of grades, the Lyceum has a system of levels: the 1st level students are equivalent to the 10th graders in typical schools, 2nd level students to 11th-graders. Each level is divided into 6 Russian groups and one Uzbek group, with a total student body of 438 level 1 and 2 students. Unlike other public schools, ALWIUT specializes in and offers Advanced Courses in Mathematics and English. According to “the Ministry of Public Education'' monitoring, ALWIUT was ranked as the №1 public school in terms of the highest matriculation rate with a percentage of 99.
Admission Process
Applicants come from all 13 regions of Uzbekistan, making ALWIUT one of the most competitive high schools in the nation. In 2021, 3500 9th grade students applied to the Lyceum. With only 182 spots to fill, the acceptance rate turned out to be merely 5.2%.
To be accepted, applicants must pass two stages of challenging exams. Out of the 3500 applicants, only 300 passed the first stage exams (which used material officially provided and fully invigilated by the University of Westminster, UK). The first exam is entirely in English and consists of two sections: Advanced Mathematics based on logic and critical thinking (Algebra, Pre-Calculus, Geometry, Trigonometry) and English (Reading comprehension, Writing, and the use of English). The second stage was a test provided by the Uzbekistan National Test Center and was used to rank the remaining applicants and accept only the top 182.
In the second (final) stage, the students pass three different tests. The first test is an IQ test that tests students’ logic and critical thinking in either Russian or Uzbek. The second test is a Math evaluation and consists of Algebraic, Trigonometric, and Geometric problems in either Russian or Uzbek. The third test is an analysis of the English Language, which focuses mainly on proper grammar usage.
Curriculum
Unlike the typical four-quarter school year of most public schools in Uzbekistan, The Academic Lyceum of WIUT has semesters. Due to only offering the last two years of high school, the school requires its students to complete four semesters to graduate. The curriculum is fabricated and approved by “The Ministry of Higher and Secondary Specialized Education”. The curriculum is fully dedicated to talented and hardworking students among the nation and to providing the chance to grow as a person through in-depth teaching of subjects. The institution pays very particular attention to Math and English classes, making them very rigorous and advanced subjects to study. Algebra fully covers both pre-calculus and calculus 1 topics on an advanced level during the first and second year of school respectively. Meanwhile, Geometry covers all High School Geometry topics as well. Likewise, English classes are taught on a very advanced level, covering English Literature, IELTS, and the use of Grammar and Vocabulary. A school week is from Monday to Saturday and consists of 20 lessons. With 80-minute long lessons, students have their first class at 8:30 AM and the last class at 1:30 or 3:00 PM.
All courses offered by the Lyceum are mandatory so that all students have the same curriculum. The school does not offer any IB, AP classes, honors classes, Area Vocational & College Programs.
In ALWIUT, students have three exams each semester - two mid-term exams and one final exam with an interval of five weeks. To proceed from one semester to the next, students must get a mark of at least 2 (on a scale of 5) on mid-term and final examinations.
Graduating students receive one diploma from ALWIUT. A “Certificate of Completion,” which can be granted by taking state exams, is also offered. These are advanced tests in Native Language, Literature, English, Mathematics, and History of Uzbekistan. Besides these, students also take Professional Education class, whereby they master the skills of Database Operators and eventually get the certificate provided that they successfully pass the final exam at the end of the second year.
